Enjoy live entertainment, free activities, and community booths in celebration of Earth Day from 12 to 4 pm at the Japanese American National Museum Plaza (100 N Central Avenue). Free and open to the public!

Performances

Opening Ceremony by Hirokazu Kosaka | LA Kyudo Kai

The opening performance of the Earth Day event, "Tsurune" (Sound of Bowstring), features the ancient bow, a single-string instrument whose resonating tones have symbolized purification in the Emperor's household and Buddhist traditions for centuries. This evocative sound sets the tone for the event.
Taiko Performance by J-Town Taiko Club

1:00 PM
A community taiko group based out of the Terasaki Budokan in Little Tokyo, ed by Maceo Hernandez and Walter Nishinaka.
Ukulele Performance by Chester Ikei

1:30 pm
Join us for a ukulele performance by Chester Ikei, featuring traditional Japanese nature-themed songs in honor of Earth Day. The set will highlight the beauty of rivers, forests, and seasons through peaceful and reflective tunes.
Shodō (calligraphy demonstration) by Kuniharu Yoshida

2:00 pm
Shodo performance by Kuniharu Yoshida, a Japanese calligrapher and Hip-hop dancer. He will be creating a large-scale Kanji character, 芽 (Me/Ga), which means "to germinate." This symbol represents Earth Day — the idea of seeds germinating and trees sprouting new leaves. Yoshida will draw the Kanji character in real time using the Oracle script, a writing style developed around 1500 BC.
Book Reading by Nikiko Masumoto

Nikiko Masumoto will give a reading of Every Peach Is a Story on the Norman Y. Mineta Democracy Plaza at 3 p.m. during the 10th annual Delicious Little Tokyo in collaboration with Sustainable Little Tokyo’s Earth Day Celebration.

Our favorite free neighborhood exploration activity is back! Pick up a bingo card at the J-Town Bingo booth and embark on a fun mission to get bingo and receive a special surprise bag of gifts. Your completed bingo card also gets you a chance to win one of our amazing prizes of Go Little Tokyo merch and small business gift cards!
Swap, share, and discover seeds at the SLT booth. Whether you're a seasoned grower or just starting, it's a beautiful way to connect and cultivate.
Craft your own Bloombie using upcycled or natural materials. Inspired by Kokeshi dolls and Ikebana artistry, Bloombies celebrate the spirit of mottainai.
Screen print your very own tote bag to take home with a special design honoring the 141-year-old history of Little Tokyo. We also encourage you to bring an old t-shirt or tote bag from home that could use a refresh!
Bringing something to upcycle? We recommend light colored items such as white, natural canvas, cream, pastel colors. Avoid dark colors like black, navy, brown, etc. Items may be canvas, cotton, or a polyester/cotton blend.
Use your hands to create flowers and other items as we continue to honor all we are surviving right now. The flowers created will be used as part of a future installation of Petals of Peace.
Get active with our friends from lttt! Pick up a paddle and enjoy some table tennis on the Plaza.
